Larch cladding in new build showing black discoloration
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.20 PM
I moved into my new build last year, this house has a few areas around windows and loft that have larch cladding throughout. The cladding was probably added about 18 months ago and we moved in 8 months ago. The cladding is showing black discoloration and I'm concerned the wood is damaged. Is the cladding perhaps missing some form of treatment the builders failed to apply? thanks!

It could be that it has not been treated properly

Blackening & discolouration is most likely occurring in areas that are taking longer to dry after periods of rain. It’s mildew forming on the wood that gives a black appearance, usually north facing side of the house that doesn’t get the sun.
The timber should turn silver after a time & become less noticeable, but there are products you can apply to the timber that helps prevent mildew forming. Ask at your local builders merchants.

It could be discoloration, but a easy fix, can be treated just to make sure it doesn't get any worse, which I think once treated would be OK, thanks

I can think of a few reasons without actually seeing the areas you are referring too:
1. Could be lack of treatment on the larch
2. Water is somehow making its way behind the cladding and can’t escape properly (maybe driving rain in through the cladding if it hasn't been sealed or fitted correctly)
3. The cladding is not properly ventilated and not allowing any moisture/condensation the chance to circulate and dissipate
Hope this helps!

People use larch for exterior cladding specifically because it turns a black colour from weathering
