Best prep for a bare brick wall for tiling
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.20 PM
I have a tired bathroom and wish to change up the tiles in the room. I can't change the layout I don't think. The walls are brick and the tiles have been layered on top of other layers and when I pull it all away I full expect it all to come away back to brick. So with this in mind, how would people recommend to start again. This is for an over shower bath.

Use 6mm hardiebacker boards. Drill, plug and screw into brick work making sure to stagger the joints. Use a high grab adhesive to get boards in place first, then screw in with your plugs imbedded into brickwork. If the wall's to uneven for grab adhesive you can use a bed of tile adhesive to fill the voids behind boards.

Hi,
To really assess this properly I would have to view, but sounds like when you are back to brickwork, you should then install hardie backer boards,to give an even water proof wall the tile on top of the hardie backer boards, recommend a 12.mm board.
Hope this helps
Kind regards

Should be sand any cement render onto brickwork. Then use a cement based adhesive to fix tiles to the render. Bob

Not the route id suggest. I would suggest getting a plasterer in to plaster the wall to leave a nice smooth strate finish for the tiler to come and proceed!
