How to tile my kitchen floor which is part concrete and part wooden floor boards?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.19 PM
I want to tile my kitchen floor but it is part concrete and part wooden floor. One tiler suggested backer board on the wooden floor and then tiling over the current vinyl in the concrete areas. Another tiler said there would likely be cracks where the two different floors meet. Is it advisable to tile over the two surfaces? And what would be the best way to do this to avoid any future issues?

Hello,
Tiling over two surface is fine. Its down to preparation. Make sure timber floor is secure with minimal movement as possible by screwing down lose or creeky boards, then cover with backer board or ply and prime whole area. Make sure concrete side is in good order. The two floor area need to be levelled and minimal lip between the two floor types. When installing the tile try not to leave the grout line where the two surfaces meet and instead try to get this line within the middle of the tile. A tile map will have to be done by the tiler to work this out. I would strongly recommend you use good quality adhesive and grout. no tubbed nonsense. Both MUST be flexible and waterproof. Don't use a cheap tiler. Job like this will need planning and attention to detail.
Hope this helps

Hi
There needs to be a 6mm expansion gap on your tiles were the concrete meets the wood, if you tile over it your tiles will crack, use a good colour matching silicone.

Use Ditra matting over the hole floor , do not use ply or backer board

I believe that when the two surfaces are leveled with ply screwed at at 200mm centers it would also be prudent to install ditra matting over ply which will also reduce movement from sub floor , do not install the tile centred over the join in floor as this will crack flexible adhesive must be used and flexible grout
Hope this helps
