Hi Janine, You need to consider whether it is solely for pedestrian use or more (driveway). I would always opt for more sub-base with clayey soil. You'll find that your soil will swell in winter (rain) and contract in summer (bake solid). If you're laying slabs, consider edging bricks on top of a footing (20mm ballast) to isolate the patio and prevent any issues with it contracting and pulling apart with the seasons. I would also advise this with brick pavias (they should do this anyway) and also tarmac. Hope this helps Dan

Hi so if laying tarmac where there is a clay base we would always recommend at least 8 inches of type one hard-core after being compressed if laying slabs we would recommend 4 inches of type one hard-core and lay them on a wet bed which is a mixture of stone dust and cement so you have a nice solid base

On a patio or path 100mm compacted Always use membrane For driveways depending on traffic I recommend 150mm to 200mm hope this helps
