Laminate under carpet. Will the laminate be ok to be used again as the top layer?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.19 PM
We are buying a property that has a nice laminate flooring, however the current owners decided to layer carpet over the top. I know this is commonplace, however I don't know what this method usually entails. Anyway, we'd like to revert it back to the laminate that is below the carpet. Is this achievable or would the laminate be ruined from the carpet layered onto it? Thanks!

It depends on whether or not they nailed gripper to it and stapled the underlay, if so will have holes around the perimeter and little holes where staples have been. My guess is, if they covered it, it wasn't a top quality in the first place, so you'll be lucky

The gripper rods would be nailed to the laminate flooring more than likely which would leave some damage on the floor potentially and some carpet fitters glue the carpet down you'd need to pull a corner up and check would be the only way to answer your question

The only damage the laminate floor would probably have would be nail holes around the edges if the previous tenant laid grippers other than that it should be fine.

If the gripper has be stuck down instead of pinned and the underlay has been sprayed instead of stapled you, you're goal of saving the laminate is a lot more achievable. It will just need a good clean.
