Hi the way I would recommend painting melamine, is to first use a good quality grip primer like “Zinnser BIN” then leave for 12 hours at least before applying any paint. Johnstones also do their own version of the Zinnser Bin primer shellac based just ask in store it’s much cheaper. If you do chose a different primer please make sure it’s shellac based. I personally like to use Johnstone aqua undercoat after I’ve used the primer, it is water based and adheres fantastic to the primers above and also it’s water based with a tiny fraction of oil, also drys fast and unlike oil based paints the odour does not linger for long, I’d apply a couple of coats of the undercoat, then two coats of Johnstones Aqua white satin or whatever colour or finish you like. I’d recommend a professional for spraying for better finish, but if you are doing it yourself apple all coats with a foam roller and using fine sanding pads between each coat plus using a Hoover with brush attachment all over after each sanding wiping down with a tac rag. Hi, I agree with the answer from Fw decorators just first thing before any coat, sand it with the finest possible sand paper very softly. Good luck
