How to tell if RSJ or lintel is fitted?

Currently redecorating a property and there's been a small extension out into the back garden from what used to be the outside wall. I'm just curious as to what's been used to support the original end wall as I can't find anything amongst all the old paperwork. Beneath where I assume the support is there's a standard doorframe and some decorative glass panels to the side. There's no signs of any movement in these or cracks in the surrounding plaster etc. I've drilled a few holes expecting to hit steel but not sure if I'm going in the right direction/far enough in. Any ideas how to check? Thanks.

It could be an I shape beam. Drill from the underside and you should hit steel if it is this

hello cut a hole in the plaster board then shine a torch in the hole

The only sure way of telling is to remove a small amount of plaster and have a look although RSJs are made from steel lintels can often be made of concrete and in some older building's can be wooden so drilling could damage these Hope this helps LMC BUILDING SERVICES

Probably they used concrete lintel for supporting. you could open a small area and have a look. But, The best way, you should find a specialist and show them. You could find many specialist from mybuilder.com. Many thanks, and good luck.
