Where is best for Kitchens
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.19 PM
Where is the best place to buy a kitchen from? or is it best to find a local company who supply and fit? Also how much am I realistically going to pay for a 16 unit kitchen to be fully fitted including flooring, tiling etc?

Best place to buy kitchen Is Howdens.
Howdens provides free estimates, very fast delivery and if something come damaged- replace immediately.

In my opinion, I prefer to use Howdens. I have fitted a variety of different manufacturers kitchens and Howdens is my preferred choice. B&Q seems overly complicated on the construction whereas Howdens is usually prebuilt. If you do select their flat pack option, the construction is simple. Ikea don't allow a void behind the carcass so pipes and cables are difficult to incorporate. Strong units though. Wren, well, if the kitchen surveyor has done his job properly and allowed enough materials... AND none of the pieces are damaged, then maybe all will go well. If you are short of anything or if anything is damaged, you can pay for the postage and have to wait at least 6 weeks for things to arrive. I do not like working with Wren, there is zero flexibility on the plan once you have committed to buy. As I said earlier, Howdens allows me to be completely flexible because sometimes you (the client) wants to change the plan on the day and sometimes, unforeseen circumstances dictate that we HAVE to change the plan on the day. This is my opinion based on experiences with fitting all of the above suppliers.
With regards to cost, there are so many variables involved and to be honest, there is a fair amount of variety. You need to have a budget, and invite several trades ro estimate. Try and get an all inclusive price from them to give a realistic idea. Kitchen ranges vary in price, tiles vary in price, how much plumbing work is required? Are there any electrical issues/amendments? Do the walls need drylining/plastering? Decorating? Flooring? Worktop materials? Does the floor need any attention? No fitter/builder worth their salt will give you a blind price because of all of the pltential anomolies involved. Sometimes you need to go by a gut feeling as much as price. You only want to do this project once so it needs to be right, you are investing a lot of money into it.

Hi there Helen,
There are a number of places to buy kitchens from, but from my experience from having to purchase and install I have found that magnet kitchens or Howdens have been the best and also very helpful with advice when purchasing, hope this helps, thanks KC

Firstly it all depends on your budget. Ikea, wicks, B&Q are at the lower end which also impacts the quality of the materials. Howdens Kitchens are good quality and in the middle range, Wren are expensive but good quality and 25 years guarantee if you get it fitted through one of their approved fitters. Of course then there are high end kitchen suppliers all over the UK, HKS or Harvey Jones, to name a couple. Always get a few quotes as some companies might be able to offer a better price because they have more buying power in places like Howdens for example.

It is difficult to estimate a cost. All depends on the end finish. If you are looking for a quick renovation i.e rental, then the cost will be a limited by budget. If you are renovating your own home then your costs will be determined by your own tastes and style i.e kitchen finish, worktops, tiles, flooring etc.
I would say magnet are the overall best in my experience. Both solid and flat pack are good quality. The also sell flooring, floor levelling and tiling materials for a complete job. My local Magnet in Bedford is great. no hassle when things go wrong or if need stuff quickly. Bear in mind flat pack will cost more in labour than solid. However, solid units will cost more per unit but will cut down labour time and these units and often better quality
hope this helps.
