Ditra Matting with flexible adhesive or hardibacker board?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.37 PM

I am wanting to get a 19m2 area tiled with 600x600 porcelain tiles. I want to know if I should use flexible adhesive and Ditra matting or hardibacker board over this floorboarded area? I am getting mixed opinions from several tilers and want to know what is right.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I personally not a fan of hardibacker. I would use jackoboard (dukka board or wedi board). They're lightweight, have thermal insulation properties, and are much easier to work with than hardi. Secure down the floorboards, then fix the jackoboard down with a flexible rubberised adhesive. Then tile onto them with a cement based adhesive

Floor boards need to be secure, then cement board AND THEN Ditra. Cement boards or Wedi do not negate the necessity to decouple. Each Individual board can still move separately due to the slight movements in the floor boards. It’s not 100% guaranteed that you’ll get fractures in the newly tiled floor without ditra, but it’s 100% guaranteed they won’t appear with it( provided you’ve secured loose boards and cement/wedi) Hope it goes well. Cheers

I like the Ditra membrane and flexible adhesive when I have a big tiles, that is good and make flexible floor no cracks in the future.

Hi, Yes Ditra matting is poorly understood and is often used incorrectly, it compensates for lateral movements and is used when a tile installation spans multiple floor surfaces like timber to concrete or on solid timber floors. When tilling on floor boards the floor needs strengthening so like the other chap said, insulation board or backer board set on adhesive and then screwed down left to set then tiled for a solid installation! You don’t need a movement matting on top, if your floor still has movement after this ditra won’t stop cracks caused by bounce in the floor.
