Hairline crack on ceiling
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.37 PM
I had a new kitchen fitted two years ago, complete with new ceiling. Recently, the upstairs bathroom radiator leaked and caused staining in the kitchen ceiling. More worryingly, I can see the beginnings of a hairline crack. It’s barely noticeable now, but I’m worried it will get worse. I’m wondering if it would be worth using polycell crack covering paint. Does it work or is there a better one I could use? Will stain blocker also help to disguise it? Thank you for your assistance

Hello Oisin personally I would scrape out the crack and flush fill it giving you a nice flat surface but make sure you dont pull out the filler when sanding then I’d you do have a water stain coming through there’s a product call zinseer bins which is a very good stain blocker and I would apply that and then pad off and touch in with a couple of coats of the paint which is on the celling so I am guessing some white emulsion, hope this helps thanks Sam

Hi oisin, first off all best to make sure that leak is 100% fixed and dried out as those stains will continue no matter what. When its completely dried out you would either scrape out along that hairline crack and back fill it with filler. If its a crack between two plasterboards you will need to do a bit of ames taping to prevent future cracking. Fill a few times then completely coat out ceiling a few times. Any stains on ceiling would need to be painting over, i recommend B.I.N zinsser sealer which is great for stain blocking. Hope this is any help to you good luck

We would always rake out the crack, apply filler and sand prior to any redecoration's.
In some instances we might apply some tape and additional filler and feather out prior to redecorating.

If any cracks appear we usually rake out and apply a scrim tape , water stained area use stain block .fill several times usually x3 then sand down using dustfree sanding . Apply waterdown coat to filled area followed by x2 coats of durable paint, Especially for kitchen ceiling
