What sort of tradesman closes off a fireplace?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.37 PM
Hi all, We have an old brick fireplace that we do not use and want to get rid off - we want the chimney to be sealed (or closed - not sure what you call this) and we want to get rid of the brick fireplace surround so it’s just like a normal wall. Can anyone tell me what sort of tradesman would do this sort of job? We don’t want any damp as a result of closing the chimney so we want to get someone in who knows how it needs to be done in order to avoid any undesirable knock on effects. Any advice much appreciated!

You need a general builder who understands that a disused flue should be vented. They will achieve this by first checking the chimney is not already blocked (eg by using a smoke pellet); fitting a redundant chimney cap to the top of the pot; then bricking up the fireplace whilst leaving a small air vent. The vent at the base and in the chimney cap should permit a sufficient air flow to prevent damp.

I agree with what the last gentleman said about venting and capping 100% before that though get your chimney swept just to make sure there’s nothing up there cos it should be empty of all debris. I would also do the same to your. Other chimneys if you have them . Sweep , cap and vent
