REMOVAL OF DOUBLE GLAZED UNIT IN ORDER TO GET A SOFA THROUGH
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.37 PM
I am moving and I cannot get my sofa down my stairs as the rooms were made smaller after they had been delivered. My only option is to take them through the window. Please could anyone tell me the do's and dont's re this. I am very conscious of the seal and if the removal men break the unit. This is my flat, not leasehold. Many thanks. Ruth

This is entirely dependant of windows make up.
Pvc with beads internal- use flat blade (such as a scraper/chisel) tap into joint between bead and frame. Start with longer beads first. Work along creating gap remove bead. Remove other longest bead. Get assistance if required to hold glass and remove shorter beads. Note packers positions for ease.
Refit beads in reverse order with glazing hammer or soft faced hammer.

There are lots of potential problems with doing this, it is wrong to assume that the window that you are wanting to remove was fitted properly in the first place. (I often come across pvc units that are fitted in openings that don't have lintels above them). If it is a timber window then it will likely be damaged during removal. If it is a leasehold property then you only own the inside and will need permission from the leaseholder to remove a window. personally i would have a close look at the construction of the settee as many have back rests that can be unbolted or removed. Settees are cheap nowadays so it may be cheaper for you to say goodbye to the ones you have and remove them in pieces, rather than opening a can of worms. If the windows are pre 1996 then they should be replaced with new and not refitted anyway as per building regs. Good luck with it.

Depending on system ,
Remove out gasket to release pressure of beads
Use flat head driver , careful not to damage seal and loosen, pull with fingers
Push unit from.inside back tight gainst frame
Flat knife to loosen beads but first try to push beads into glass to see if loose, they may just clip off, if not tap flat knife inbetween bead and frame to pop beads off.
Easier to take out than put back in so becareful but not difficult. 30min job at best

Removal of internal bead depends on being either angled or scribed . But you should start by removing both sides first with a flat knife and glazing hammer . Be careful as damage to bead can happen. Then remove bottom bead and top last to prevent glass from falling on you .remove glass safely . For placing glass back make sure packers are in place as this stop the glass from condensation. Start with bottom bead , top and sides using glazing hammer to knock them back in place. But if you never done it before I recommend you to get a window fitter and should not be expensive It's safer
