Advice on my wooden front door

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.37 PM

I would like some advice on my wooden front door if anyone would be kind enough. The current door has numerous problem; it doesn’t seem to fit in the frame well so it’s draughty, it doesn’t open easily at all, the lock to open it doesn’t work and the glass pattern isn’t pleasant. It sits in what I am guessing is called a wooden frame with a matching window above the door which the door frame extends upwards to house. I had intended just to bin the door and have a upvc or composite door put in, but it is solid wood and fits the period of the property. It also seems to match the internal doors in terms of the wood so I presume it’s original. I am a bit nostalgic in nature so I am wondering if as joiner could fix all these issues and whether it’s worth it or whether I should just look to contact a double glazing business to rip out the wooden frame and start it again.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Obviously without being hands on , hard to say if it sticks it could need to be planned. But it's already drafty, could add draft strips. The lock may be adjusted, or may need replacement ( don't by modern as cheap and nasty, see specialist iron monger.) A good joiner would look at it and advise. Get a price, then a price for full replacement in plastic/ composite.

I would definitely be more inclined to try and repair the original door, unless it is in really bad shape. It would be a shame to replace a nice timber door with a upvc one.

I agree with other comments, all within the scope of skilled carpentry & joinery, hard to describe here without hands on as previously said but there is a way of easing the doorframe by removing and refitting the architraving, thus depending upon the position and composition of the doorway and surrounding walls this can be achieved to provide a slim and draught proof fit of the existing door.

As someone who always likes to keep original features as this is one of the reasons you love your home i would definitely ease and adjust the door and change the lock timber repairs to shire oak sash are second nature so are no problem . A upvc door will not last as long as the original as it is possibly 100 years + .

Definitely keep the original door if its not rotten its mendable. The glass units can be swapped for double glazing, the door will fit in the frame if it once did before and the draught can be excluded in many ways. Ive done this many times before. It all depends on the current state. If you’ve any doubts im here to help.
