Is my flat roof extension higher than wall of original house

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.37 PM

We have a 1930s semi with a double storey rear extension that was done in 1982. It looks like the wall on the extended part of the house is higher than the wall on the original part of the house. I have a photo of I knew how to add it on here, I would. We are looking to remove the flat roof and replace with a pitched roof. How likely is it that the wall is higher than the original house and if so, what is involved in adjusting it? The ceiling height in the extended part of the house is 5cm lower than original house.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Due to the permitted development rights, the two story extension you say that has been built on the rear of the property must not be higher than the eaves(first course of tiles) on the existing building, height wise, however because you indicated this was done in 1982 it should be fine. These are the regulations for two story extensions at the rear of the property as of now. If it does have to be shortened when removing the flat roof you would need to restructure the walls to fit rafters (support beams) to allow for proper structure of a pitched roof. Yes it would be more costly, and it’s hard to say without a picture or having a look, as it can depend on a lot of factors such as wiring of the extension, any internal pipes in the walls and the foundation of the wall. Hope this can help a little bit but it’s really hard to say without evidence of the problem.
