Smells from adjoining neighbours wood stove

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.36 PM

We are in a late 1930s semi-detached house with a shared chimney, we had our gas stove fitted about 8 year ago, chimney swept and lined and had no probs til now. The neighbours have had a wood burning stove fitted, swept chimney and lined, straight away we were getting terrible smells that i can only describe as a toxic plastic smell in our lounge from fire place,we reported this to them and they got their stove installer back out who found no issues other than our fire surround not been properly sealed and maybe a couple of loose bricks, he assured us the job was done properly, since then we have made sure there is no gaps and believe we have sealed everything, only now the toxic smell has eased but we can still smell the wood burning, there doesn't seem to be any smoke but the smell is also very strong in our upstairs bedroom which is above the lounge and the chimney breast follows up through there, but no smells in loft at all. Could this mean there is an issue with the shared chimney? Who do we get to inspect both sides properly. Thank you in advance

If it's been done properly it's okay and there should be no smell smoke if there's a very small hole in the flue lining then you will get smoke coming through. Maybe put a smoke test to make sure it's okay

Hi you should be getting no smells through your wall. There's could be a couple of issues 1. The could be a breach in the liner this could be investigated by a qualified sweep using a camera to inspect the flues integrity. 2. The liner have been installed prior to it being correctly swept so it could heating up soot debris in the flue possible on the area where the fkue bends st a 45 degree. It there are loose bricks this would allow this smell pass through to your flue. Was the installer HETAS registered!? If so contact HETAS and ask them to advise.
