How to stop yellow stains showing through painted plaster

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.53 PM

We are renovating an old house. The walls are externally of brick, and internally made of lath and plaster. We have started painting the plaster with emulsion paint but yellow patches keep appearing through the paint, all over, not in one particular patch. We have tried stabilising solution but it hasn't made any difference. Please could anyone advise us why this is happening and what we can do to stop it?

It sounds like the old lathe and plaster wall is absorbing the water from the paint you are using and when drying out leaving a stain you could try using a stainblock or oil based (undercoat) paint prior to your finish paint http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EverBuild-Stainblock-Spray-400ml-/330578629198?pt=UK_DIY_Material_Paint_Varnish_MJ&hash=item4cf805924e

Without inspecting the property it is hard to indentify the cause but it could well be a result of historic soluble stains leaching into the paint surface. Try a test patch with Zinsser BIN, Zinsser 123 stain block products. Then overpaint as required. Otherwise Classidur is a stain blocking paint. Ensure that this staining is not a symptom of is damp ingress as this can require more serious remedial measures.
