Can you build a small wall on a tarmac driveway?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.57 PM

Our home is a new build. We want to build a small wall on one side of our driveway. Do we need to dig up a thin layer of the tarmac? Or can we just build on top of it? Nothing will be attached to it, it's just for more privacy on the driveway. The wall won't be high.. Only 4 or 5 or even 6 bricks high no more than that

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

not a good idea as you have no knowledge of what the sun strata is like, you really need a strip foundation ,it need not go down very far unless you are looking at a wall over 900mm high

No you'll need to dig up a strip of tarmac and any loose ground, then pour a concrete foundation for the wall. Tarmac will soften in hot sunshine and move / loose it's strength.

Hi, no this isn't a good Idea, as tarmac isn't an ideal foundation and its highly likely not going to be level. Your best bet is to cut out tarmac dig down to required depth and pour a strip footing, this will not only have a better finish but will have more strength and last for many many years.
