What to use to level out bowed solid wall

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.57 PM

I have a solid exterior brick wall (non cavity) upstairs (not ground level) that is really bowed floor to ceiling and start to end and needs to be levelled before plastering. Structurally sound otherwise. Have been strongly advised NOT to use bonding or browning as it attracts moisture. Had the wall checked by damp specialist who said its bone dry, but otherwise condensation and mould problems on this wall. Outside the wall has been rendered. Wall was already multi finished on top of lime plaster many years ago. What suitable product can I use now for levelling this out? Lots of conflicting information as some say use hardwall but others say don't use any gypsum products at all. Last thing I want to do is hack everything off back to bare brick as its a good inch or two of lime plus a couple mm of the multi finish on top and it will be a bigger job. And I don't want to use original lime render as its costly to get a specialist (let's be honest most people wouldn't want to).

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

1. Hack it off and render with sand and cement (can also add some dehydrated lime too, in the mix) 2. If you don't mind loosing some space, build a frame and board it. No insulation needed as the air gap will be better in your case. (If the wall is "beaten" by the elements). 3. If there is condensation building up, find out if you can vent the room (i.e. if it is a bathroom, put and extracting fan) or vented double glazed units.

I would re lime the wall or use the lime green system which lets the wall breathe, its wood fibre insulation topped with lime plaster and really works. Doñt use cement or gypsum it will destroy your house

Hack off and start again , or if the wall is genuinely dry and sealed from outside , dub out with bonding coat and reaskim. Got the option of baton and board but your losing room space then. Hope this helps
