Do 20 year old cast iron radiators in a hard water area need a power flush

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.57 PM

We have rented our home for 20 years. It has current gas safety certificate. We have had two radiators replaced the system was on a British Gas service contract they said that they will not replace the now leaking radiator without a power flush, so the landlord has engaged an engineer who will do it. I was told that the radiators do not need flushing as they are cast iron. Is this correct? The boiler is obsolete and rated G but not a priority for the landlord. Our bills are extremely high.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, the procedure called Powerflush will clean the water from debris, sludge and metal particles(magnetite) giving a better water quality protecting the boiler and all central heating components and of course better efficacy. Cast iron radiators are very keen to produce poor water quality especially for 20 years time. Powerflush is usually advisable to be done every 10 years (depending on the system you have) and it is a mandatory requirement when installing a new boiler in order to not have your warranty voided.

Any radiator that is 20 years old will need a powerflush, as long as there are no signs of serious rust externally . Every 10 years or sooner if in a hardwater area! Also when installing a new boiler should a powerflush be performed. Install a sentinel scalepro inline at stop tap. The powerflush will restore the flow, effectiveness of the radiant heat, and remove the sludge and debris, known in the trade as magnetite. But it sounds to me like.you need a whole new heating system!!!
