Painting over paint on unprimed plaster walls

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.57 PM

I found out that the walls of our house have been painted but the plaster was not primed. The paint started peeling and I had to strip it back to the plaster. I have high ceilings and a hall to paint. I have re-done the walls where the paint peeled off (like a latex skin), but I am assuming the walls downstairs will be the same (silk emulsion painted, directly onto un-primed plaster). Before painting I prepped the walls as normal, not expecting the paint to bubble and de-laminate when complete. Can I use a paint that won’t make the existing paint peel off? Stripping it will be a nightmare as it is 10ft high.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Remove all loose or peeling paint from the damaged area using a putty knife apply a thin layer of patching filler let this all dry sand off to surface is flat wipe down the walls so free of dust then use a primer on all the wall let this dry then you can get on with the painting 👍 hope this helps regards Lisa

U'nfortunately, if you didn't prime or mist coat the walls there is a good chance the paint may start to come away at some point. There isn't anything you can put on it to prevent that happening so you can take a chance and hope it stays put, or scrape it off and start again.

Me personally I would strip it all back, misscoat it properly, and then repaint the walls (as the bond will be there then) otherwise you end up with the same scenario Gary
