Quotes on a property prior to making an offer?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.53 PM

We are wanting to buy a victorian terrace that needs a complete refurb in Herne Hill. Is it fair to ask builders to come and give a quote for the work prior to securing the property? Are most prepared to do this? Otherwise how can we know what to offer...? The work will probably include electric re-wiring, central heating, new kitchen, new bathroom.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

if you have a full stuctural survey on the property this should tell you what the property is worth, it should also give you a list of faults, if you ask for a rough guide on the cost of the work required, them you know what to offer. but what you offer and what the seller wants is always miles apart. It is unfair to even think about asking builders to quote for work that may or may not happen on a house you have not even made an offer on put your hand in your pocket an get a survey done.

I can tell you now, this home will swallow money like no tomorrow.I agree with adr on the other bit.We waste enough time looking at jobs for dreamers (not directed at you by the way) that have no idea on real costs of building work so i wouldnt expect a rush of offers to help on this one.No other professional gives their time so freely so why would a builder, especially when there is so little chance of getting the job.Why not ask the surveyor to look and you can pay him if you buy it:)
