Electrical

Cable runs for living room sockets hidden behind baseboards.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.39 PM

I purchased a former council estate and have discovered the living room electrical run hasn’t been chased into the plaster or in today’s preferred zones. The cable (three core) has been run in a channel/space at the base of each wall, laying on the concrete subfloor, then ran up to each socket. While no wires are protruding and are fully visible, I’m wondering if I should hire someone to come re-wire the room.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

As previously mentioned, unless you’re doing a big refurbishment then no. Do make a note of where they are etc, even a diagram; this will help if you’re doing skirting boards for example - you’ll know where not to drill!

There is probably no need to rewire but if you are concerned about the condition of the electrics in your flat, get a qualified, experienced Electrician who has professional indemnity insurance to conduct an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). Depending on the size of your property the Electrician should take between half a day and a full day to do a thorough inspection and testing of your flats electrics. They should then provide you with the EICR certificate which should detail any issues in the observation section.

Unless If you are doing a refurb I wouldn’t bother. That’s how it used to be done in Domestic dwellings back in the day . As long as they are not Visible to the naked eye you should be fine . If you need any more information or more help, please feel free to ask . McTigue Construction Ltd
