Cause of carpet damage

I have a hall, landing and stair carpet. It is a good quality carpet (Axminster) layed on a concrete ground floor but at 21 years old its nearing the end of its useful life. Not unexpectedly the underlay appears to have perished. My question relates to my concern over several four small areas where the carpet has become threadbare (all on the concrete ground floor). Had they been in the centre where you expect wear and tear I would not be surprised. But all four seem to be against the skirting where nobody ever walks (one under a radiator (no leaks), another in a corner). The rate of deterioration has been fairly rapid (over about 6 months). I have no pets and am not aware of any mice etc) Is this a known problem? Could I have some kind of infestation (ants?) Clearly I may find something when I take up the carpet but I wondered what might be the cause? Or is this normal? Clearly if there is a problem I would like to sort before a new carpet is laid.

Hi I would say if the carpet is in an area where you don't walk and has been rapid in the last 6 months you might be looking at moths . You can get some information on the link below . It explains a few things to look for and also what else it could be if it's not moths. I would recoomend getting in a pest control just to check it out as if it is moths then any new carpet you put down would be eaten in the same way.
