Maximum window size for side opening

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.38 PM

I would like to replace my sitting room window with the same style, two side openings and a top middle opener but this time with the side opening hinge. We currently have the top hinge with the handle at the bottom. However we I have been told that this is not possible due to the size of the glass and would either have to have an extra pane of glass Ie three small panes which means more plastic which I don't want or to have the top hung hinge. The size of the window is approx 149cm in height and 179cm Wide. Is this true? Two of our neighbours has exactly the same new windows with the side openings so surely it is possible. Thanks for any advice.

The size of openers can vary from different manufacturers. Our manufacturer will do a maximum side hung window 750 wide and a maximum of 1500 high and a top hung 1200 wide. Therefore I cannot see any reason why you can not do the design you want. It is worth getting another company to look at your proposed design to see if they can match your specification. A manufacturer needs to make sure the hinges are strong enough to take the weight of the size of window and glass you want to keep the windows within there guarantee. Hope this helps

Manufactures do not like to make side hung windows more than 1200 high ,they can be made but they tend to put a disclaimer in saying they will not guarantee due to the weight however there are mega egress hinges that can take up to 40kg Non standard systems like WURU Manufacture large and heavy systems so I think it more the case of search for specialist manufacturers a cost effective option might be to consider tilt and turn but this will have bigger plastic sight lines..ian costelloe.

Hi, I think you'll find that most window manufacturers would class this design as 'out of specification', however, you could enquire about using heavy duty side hung hinges which have greater tolerances for larger sashes. Have you spoken with your neighbour? They may have heavy duty hinges but even then they might've been advised against this design but decided to accept the risk. Hope this helps.
