Can I paint emulsion matt over water based satinwood
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.40 PM
I wrongly used Layland water based satin for wood and metal to cover some water stain on my ceiling, which is painted with brilliant white emulsion Matt. It now looks terrible. Can I use emulsion Matt to cover satin wood, or do I need to sand it down first. Thanks a lot for your advice.

maybe will be ok, but best to try a small area first, but matt emulsion probably won't stick to satinwood. If you want to use a matt emulsion give it a coat of diluted 50/50 oil based undercoat/white spirit first.

Just give it a little sand, wipe of dust, roll or spray stain stop or oil based paint (undercoat) on the affected area when dry re-apply second coat if required and when fully dry touch up with white emulsion, but bare in mind you will most probably see the touch ups anyway... Unless you paint the whole ceiling..

you need to treat the stain first with oil based u/c blot out the whole area of the damaged stain then a day later give your 2 coats f emulsion.
remember to sand down the damaged area first, any filling do after the stain has dried.

Satinwood waterbased or oil based should not be put onto a ceiling. Get some p240 and smooth off area in question. Once smooth again apply zinsser cover stain with a radiator roller. Two coats this will cover any stains. Now depending on the ceilings quality if its good surface you can snag the areas in question. Personally I would snag areas in question and wait until it's dry apply two coats af matt to the whole ceiling .
