Full rewire but electrician is no longer registered

Hello. I have been renovating my house which has had a full rewire. Doing as much work myself (studwork, plasterboarding etc) this has taken a long time from 1st fix to 2nd. My Electrician has finished but has now advised that he can't issue a cert as he's no longer registered. I plan on selling the house so require certs for building control etc. What's my best option? Thank you for any advise offered. Cheers Andy

Just another excuse. Of course he can issue a certificate. Don't accept silly excuses like this. All electricians should issue certificates whether 'registeted' or not.

Being blunt, this should be your sparky's problem, not yours. Don't pay him for the second fix until you get a certificate (if not too late?). Failing that your only real way forward is to have an EICR done. This does not check the design or validate what you cant see but it gives a future owner an indication that the system is safe. To do properly this costs several hundred quid so again I would be going back to the original sparks to cover that cost. To be clear though, this is not as good as a proper Installation Certificate, backed by a Certification body such as NICEIC and so should not be sufficient for Building Control (but they may let you off?) and if the buyer was savvy and knew it had just been rewired, they might push you harder on it.

If he can't complete a certificate then he's not an electrician! He's an installer. To certificate, you must be qualified, and as a minimum be Part P registered (Unless they get the council to come out and check their work each time at a high cost). They must also have public liability insurance. Without these, a certificate wont be worth the paper it's written on. Sorry but I do not agree with Elec-craft. The electrian should have told you from the beginning, or as soon as they lost their registration, but it sounds like they've retired or they know there is something wrong with the work and don't want to either cover it up or pay to fix. Or knew from the start that they couldn't complete the work. Do not pay him until you have a certificate and I would find a 3rd party electrian to test and inspect, deducting their costs from your original electrian's bill. Tradespeople like that give the rest of us a bad name.

I assume he is referring to not being able to “self certify” the works and notify building control via his previous membership under the Part P Scheme. The electrician who completed the works will still be able to issue a “Electrical Installation Certificate”. You would then be obliged to contact building control yourself and notify the works that way - fees will no doubt apply. Hopefully, you haven’t paid the electrician and you can (and should) withhold this until the certificate is received. If they fail to do this, you should proceed to report the company / individual to trading standards. The other option you have is by trying to find an electrician who will sign the works off as their own. I would strongly recommend you do not do this as anyone willing to do this may be in breach of the terms of their Competent Person Scheme. Secondly, if there was an issue you would most likely not have any cover from your home insurance or that from the company who eventually certified the work. Hopefully this helps, but perseverance with the original electrician then involve building control is the best solution.

Just the registered electrician can sign out the certificate. I'm fully qualified I have the 2391-52. I can test but because I'm not registered I can not realise any certificate. So my tasting will be useless. In your case I hardly sugestion you to speak with your electrician , which has to find for you a qualified electrician(registered) which is able to sign out the certificate.
