Use spare driveway gravel as sub base beneath bike store pavers?
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.40 PM
I'm planning on building a 2.4m (W) x 1.8m (D) bike store. I'm going to use some spare 600mm x 600mm pavers for the floor. I've got a load of spare driveway pea gravel and was wondering if I could use it as a sub base beneath the sand and cement dry mix I'll lay the pavers on? It's not a huge area, obviously, and won't be dealing with much traffic, but the ground beneath can get quite waterlogged in winter. Alternatively, could I mix the gravel with some sharp sand so it beds down and compacts better? Many thanks.

Id honestly dig the lot out properly, skip the wet gravel and do it to specification. Flags will end up looking like dogs dinner if you take short cuts and don’t put them down to correct construction detail. It not just about compaction and getting a hard surface, that doesn't carry much weight often frost, and settlement will come into it for longevity as will compaction.

I wouldn’t use the pea gravel under the paving. Make a sharp sand cement mix on a hardcore bed. Use the pea gravel around the edges to create drainage channels. You don’t want to have water getting underneath the internals. Put a dpm on top of the hard core with a sand blinding. Will stop any water entering the area.
