Changing a Gledhill Boilermate 2000 for a Gledhill Torrent TST 250 or 350 OV

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

Hi All I currently have a Gledhill Boilermate 2000 thermal store (150L) open vented that is approaching 19 years old and i have been very happy with it. I would like to upgrade it to the Gledhill Torrent TST 250 or 350 Open vented and was wondering if this would be a straightforward swap and therefore be a cheaper option than changing the whole system. The heat is supplied by a Glow worm Micron 50FF which has no problems but again is the same age as the Boilermate. The other problem is finding tradespeople who are familiar with the heat store system to provide quotes and do the job and therefore should i bite the bullet and change to a non thermal store system? A number of my neighbours have had their Boilermates removed and combi boilers installed (as I suspect some plumbers are wary of these heat store systems) however they appear to have a lot of recurrent problems with these and generally seem unhappy with the combi boilers. Edit: Many thanks for the advice. I think I will change both and go for unvented.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would probably put an unvented cylinder and external controls in as more people are familiar with them

Hi, I have worked on several of these systems over the years carrying out maintenance & repairs and have found them to be very problematic & difficult to quickly source spare parts for. I think you’ve been very lucky having 19 years service with no problems as I’m sure your neighbours will have told you. Taking in to consideration the age of both Gledhill Boilermate and the Glowworm micron boiler I would recommend replacing or upgrading the whole system. Last thing you want is to replace the Gledhill unit then the boiler fail. It will be more cost effective for you to replace them both or upgrade the system at the same time.
