How to identify wires from loop and switch on ceiling light fixture

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

Hi, I've just removed the ceiling light fixture in my bedroom and I'm left with 6 wires coming from the ceiling. 2 reds, 2 blacks and 2 earth wires. Is there a way to identify which black wire is coming from the light switch and which one is the loop wire? There's no other markings on the wires. Thanks in advance! Mark

Whilst the circuit Is dead use a continuity tester between the red and black cable of each separate cable and switch the switch on, the one that beeps the black is the switch live

Use a continuity tester to verify which cable comes back from the switch as a live (switched live) it will be one of the blacks. Then flag that cable as a live & connect

The best thing is to work this out before removing the fitting, but now, the only way is to isolate the circuit safely and use a continuity tester, if you are unsure of how to do that, call an electrician, should be a quick job for someone who knows what they are doing

1 Make sure circuit is isolated . 2 Put light switch for the light you are working on into the on position. 3 strip ends of wires coming out of ceiling. 4 now test for continuity between the red and the black wires 5 providing switch was right way up and functioning correctly the tester should bell out between a red and black cable 6 separate these to mark them quick with a bit of electric tape nothing special only temporary now turn switch of and test between them two wires again should now have nothing this confirming the black switch line
