Bricklaying & Repointing

Coping or Poured in Concrete Cap on external brick wall

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

Hi our freeholder is having some extensive works done (at flat owners expense) externally. Part of this was to replace and/or repair coping stones on a long access balcony. This is what was set out in the surveyors specification. What the builders have done instead is built a frame on top of the parts of the wall to make a pour in concrete cap using general purpose concrete for the parts which need replacing. They said they could not get coping stones to match which seems un likely as they are just plain blocks, nothing fancy. One strip they laid on Friday and then took the frame off Friday evening and it has been left exposed to the rain all weekend. This doesnt seem right. Am I right in thinking this is likely to be a way to save costs and the concrete cap will not be as durable as replacing coping stones?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

With any concrete pouring ,there are curing times, usually 7-10 days depending on strength of concrete. All coping stones are polished finished, with internal steel bars for strength. My issue with making own capping, is getting a good finnish ,also wont be cured enough, this time of yr temperature dropping to minus at night, could cause concrete to become brittle and at worst fall apart.

A poured coping will always be weaker, if it was me I would replace with matching coping or unfortunately take off existing and replace all you will never be happy with a poured coping especially if it’s in eye view
