Installing door at bottom of the stairs - Scotland

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

Hi, We live in a converted bungalow in Scotland with two bedrooms upstairs. Previously downstairs to the left of the stairway there used to be two rooms - one with a door close to front of the property one with door towards the back. This was converted to one room and we wanted to split the room up again. This would mean Installing a door at the bottom of the stairs. We can't get anyone out to look at the moment but saw the building regulation about leaving space for a stair lift. The space is only just big enough for a doorway so the door would be next to the stair. Do building regs allow for this as long as the door opens inward and the frame doesn't obstruct the stair? Or would there be issues with this? Does it help that we live in a converted bungalow and all living accommodation is downstairs except the two bedrooms? It seems really unlikely anyone would ever want to install a stairlift in this house!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would strongly recommend talking to someone from Building Regs as Scotlands rules are very different to England when it comes to doors, Access, Health and Safety etc. They can offer guidance and tell you what you can and can't do before you commit. However, In my experience, most reputable builders/joiners I've worked with in Scotland are very aware of the regulations. Hope this helps.
