Bricklaying & Repointing

Laying Indian stone patio over exisiting concrete floor

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.40 PM

I have seen mixed messages on whether this is fine to do from various sources and research. I wanted to put mortar straight onto the concrete base. SBR/Slurry on the base of the stones and level with a fall/drop running away from my house. I have been told it could pop with frost if the concrete isnt dug away and a MOT or alternative base isn't laid before I use mortar and lay stones. The concreate base is decent I don't want to get it out to lay rubble/MOT sort of base, compact it etc etc. What is the answer here? Thanks!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

As long as you point the joints with a 3-1 sand and cement mix you should be fine. If you use a brush in jointing compound then you'll have problems. Do not use it

I'm doing exactly that at the moment. As long as you use a fairly wet mix and you're not laying in sub-zero temperatures you'll be fine. You can add an accelerant to the concrete or buy quicker drying cement (expensive) if you're particularly worried about the wet/cold. Generally, I will always cover with tarp at the end of the day for peace of mind. Also, bear in mind that the concrete will take up to 48hrs to cure in winter months. Hope this helps. All the best

If the concrete base is alright “solid” then you can lay flags on top of it, the concrete base should have mot stone underneath it anyway so I wouldn’t put the time and effort into breaking up a perfectly good base, the only concern is if you’re next to the house you need to be 150mm below the DPC so that’s something you’d need to check but running flags on concrete is fine as long as it’s a solid base.

You can lay your stone slabs on a mortar mix but you have to paint a pva glue under neath the slab before laying
