Central Heating

Combi boiler cold water slug each time hot water used.

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.39 PM

Moved house recently, first time with gas and combi boiler. 20 yr old Worcester boiler, annual service, works fine. We intend replacing it before it fails or becomes too inefficient. Have done some research and it seems most combis take +/_ 4 seconds before producing hot water. Very wasteful of gas and water. Have seen Storage Combis but are too big for our situation. Are there any combis that are a half way house that dont send a slug of cold water down the pipes. This is very annoying as it cools the basin of hot water. Thank you.

Depending on where the boiler is situated you will always get some cold water at the outlets first. This is called the dead leg. Once this come through you should get hot water withing 10 seconds or so Max. However it's all dependant on where your boiler and outlets are situated. It won't use too much water or gas either compared to having a hot water cylinder which requires your boiler to heat up every so often is much more less efficient

Get a Combi with “ pre heat “ facility then you will save on gas

Have a "combi Save" installed. A Small device in hot water pipework with a ball of wax in it, good for saving water on initial water draw. And higher end boiler will have a pre-heat mode(small calorifier that holds/stores hot water). Best way to get instant hot water is to have your pipework to hot taps in a configuration as straight and near as possible to the heat source-good luck with that in the uk.
