Flat grp giver glass roof and extractor fans

Hello, I have a shower room built inside a dormer tiled extension, with a grp fiber glass flat roof. The builder has put in an extractor fan for building control purpose but forgot to take the pipe out on top of the flat roof. My question is can he drill a hole into the flat roof now and fit in a flute or something that would let out the warm air that is extracted from the shower? Is it possible to drill a hole into a grp roof without permanently damaging it? Also is there any other solution to this problem ? One builder has said that I can take the vent pipe and guide it to the underside of the fascia board and install a 4 inch vent there. That sounds good but the roof is insulated with celotec throughout so there won’t be any empty space for the pipe to be guided unless I take part of the ceiling down. If drilling into the grp roof is not a good idea what can I possible do to solve this problem? Thank you so much.

Hi you could drill a hole through the roof but it would have to be sealed properly. If there is a out side wall it could go through there - quite straight forward either way. I hope this helps.

Personally, I wouldn’t drill any hole into the GRP roof material. See what a sparky thinks? They usually have to install these, so he/she may come up with a solution? Easiest(ish) way to solve this, would be to have a completely new fan fitted to the outside “cheek” or side of the dormer and get a sparky to wire it from the ceiling one, but isolate the ceiling one at same time, so the new one works off your existing isolating switch. You will probably have to have a bit of patch/plastering done or re-tiling etc? I’m just wondering if he has vented the fan in someway to a soffit vent? As the Building Inspector should have inspected the fan?

Hello That is not a problem putting the pipe for the vent through the Grp roof .make sure the roofer is onsite when being carried out so it can be flashed straight away so is water tight.

Yes you drill a hole in grp roof put pipe threw and reseal with grp.I have done this myself. Regards Brendan

You have a builder that's done the job, so you need to speak to him as he will know your job, and the reason why, unless your looking for an answer to then pull the builder on and say I've been given advice which is this this and this. Stange question if you've a builder already, plus building control should of check that's it'll vented properly to sign you off.

Hi To be honest when we normally vent out we would do it through the the dormer horizontally so that there would be less chances of a leak through the roof at any point
