Electrical

One row of spotlights series and other parallel

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.19 PM

I have a row of 3 spotlights right side of room and 3 spotlights left side of room, and pendant light in middle. Have a 3 dimmer switch and 2 cables from switch to ceiling Right side lights are much dimmer than left side. Upon investigation I found only brown (live) wire and earth connected in all 3 right spotlights. Blue wire doesn't touch spotlights. A wire connects from last spotlight to pendant light in middle. But on left side both brown and blue connected...I.e. in parallel I believe and is nice and bright. Any reason why my electrican may have wired it this way. I can't seem to get hold of him otherwise would ask him directly.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Get some one else to look at / do, if you can’t contact him now, there are plenty of others who will help you. Sounds to me like he is inexperienced, in a total rush or just got his couldn’t care less hat on. No idea why he didn’t connect them all up properly.

Best not to try and sort this yourself. But what you have said does sound correct about the way he has wired them. Have no idea why he would wire it like this. But call in a Professional!

Major concerns are firstly that you can see what he colours of the cables. As per your description, it is clearly wrong. It brings into question the validity of the circuit. This should be identified on whichever certificate was necessary. I can almost hear you now saying “What certificate ?” . You urgently need a qualified electrician to investigate this situation.
