Best way to tile over floorboards

I’m trying to find a tiler to lay down porcelain 600x600 floor tiles in my new kitchen area. My kitchen fitter thinks that I should be putting down plywood over the floorboards and tiling on that but the two tilers I spoke to said they would just use some ditra matting directly on top of the floorboards. What is the proper way of tiling on to floorboards? Also, is it better to get the entire area tiled, wall to wall or just tiled up to the units?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Over board with 6mm hardie backer board (not plywood) stuck down with a 6mm notch trowel and screwed, then anti fracture tile matting stuck down with a 6mm notch trowel over the backer board, tiles to be set on top of the Matt, best way to install and for non failure of the tiles, can go under the units or up to the units, whichever comes first

You can use matting but it's not very cost effective ply wood would be much cheaper so long as the ply wood is primed properly twice your good to go no need to go fully to the walls if you can get your kick boards off and make sure the ply wood is properly fixed to the floor so theres no movement in it hope this helps

Tiling on wood is a no no. Wood expands and contracts with moister and temperature at a radically different rate to tile. There are much better alternatives these days. So either put cement board down first, using the appropriate fixing method. Or as suggested a decoupling membrane or mat. I would always try to go under the units at least a short way. This allows the plinths when fitted to sit on top of the tile, giving a neat finish.

Not many tilers will tile onto plywood anymore as there is to much risk of the tiles blowing. Make sure the boards are securely fixed then lay ditramatt, tile on top ,never have a problem.

You need to make sure floor boards are secure before overlay of Hardie board, which should be cris-crossed with the floor boards , ( which should have been screwed down) . Everything should be screwed down !! Then use an anti fracture matting . This should be put down with a pressure sensitive resin . Then tiled . Usually you should go up to the legs of the units , tile under white goods / depending on height of worktops .
