New chimney pots installed, water still dripping into fireplace.
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.19 PM
I had the chimney pots replace on my chimney because of water dripping into my rear dining room fireplace. Unfortunately the work carried has not solved the issue. Where do I go from here? The other fireplaces are fine. Could the leak be coming in from the roof? Or did the tradesman not seal the pots properly? The chimneys are now capped. They are vented. Cant really say what kind of caps they are. But they have tops on. Sorry not really able to give anymore detail. Regards.

are the chimneys capped or open, what type of caps ?
IHave found in the past some cowls mainly the clay breather caps with holes around them are not fit for porpoise &
Leak water into the chimney. The water sits on top then runs. Down the sides in through the holes so if it's this type of cowl I would change that, I don't use this type of cowling any longer did speak to the manufacturers years ago about this and am still waiting on the getting back to but it's early days it's only about 9-10 yrs ago when they said they would get back to me.

When you say you had the pots changed im assuming you installed vented pots to prevent rain ingres! If so there not installed properly or rain gets in elsewhere. That could be open jointed brickwork or faulty flashing.

First of all they commonly known as mushrooms and should be sealed when fixing with mortar one to stop the wind rattling two to stop the rain coming in but 9 times out of ten it's down to the flaunching on the chimney most roofers dont use concrete when re flaunching they tend to use sand and cement.ent this tends to crack and after a few months the water gets in and runs down the chimney

More than likely a case of the chimney needs water sealing , the chimney becomes porous over time and soaks up water like a sponge, 9/10 it’s the problem and you don’t need half the work done to the chimney that certain ‘roofers’ suggest.
