Boiler cuts out when on for between 10-20 minutes

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.18 PM

When I switched my central heating on last night it tripped the 63amp RCD which says not protected on the split board of my consumer unit and shuts down all the power. When I switched the RCD back on and tried switching the heating only on the same thing happened. I then tried switching the heating controls on again to include the hot water as well and that appeared to allow the boiler to run for 2 hours and then shut down the electrics again. Also, when I switched off the hot water, while the heating was still running, the RCD tripped out again and shuts down all of the electrics. I have looked at the consumer unit and one side is protected by an RCD and on the other side there are 2 MCB's that are for the boiler, controls/emersion and one other MCB that is for a small ring main in the upstairs of our property. My boiler is a Trianco Aztec classic electric boiler 12 KW which is a wet system the same as a gas boiler. It also has an emersion heater and a pressure vessel

Hi Stuart. I would advise you to check the the connections around the hot water cylinder as you might have a weep somewhere leaking onto wires. If you have an unvented cylinder check around the tank stat.

Hi, Is your hot water supplied via an emersion? It sounds like the coil within the emersion is broken and causing the RCD to trip. You are able to do a continuity test on the element to see if there is a breakage within the cylinder without removing the emersion. If you don't know how to carry this out, I would advise to get this carried out by a competent Heating engineer. Many things can trip an RCD but, if this is only happening with hot water demand, I would pin-point the emersion. I hope this helps! Matt @ Plumb Assist
