Crack under bay window
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.36 PM
Hi, I have a vertical crack underneath my bay window upstairs. The wallpaper was wet too. The skirting boards are coming away from the walls too. There is a crack on the outside but not in the same place. Could this be subsidence or is water getting in? I don't know what kind of tradesman I need to call. Thanks.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Without seeing photos it would be difficult to evaluate. However I presume that there is no cracks at ground floor level? If not it is probably not subsidence and rather a problem with the bay window’s structure ie lintel. Also water can penetrate and expand when ice occurs. Hope this helps

Without seeing pics it’s difficult to ascertain but yes it could be subsidence. There are lots of mitigating circumstances though it does sound as though water is coming through. It would be better to have a few local builders visit and advise. Then if the general view is subsidence it would be worthwhile having a structural engineer have a look

Can be many factors, it would be a good idea for a structural engineer to diagnose the problem first before commencing on any work.
