Replacing a Internal Stop Cock

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.36 PM

Bit of a numpty question this but I've previously had a leak with my internal stopcock. A plumber did come out and stopped the leak with some PTFE tape. I'm due to get some work done on my bathroom and am a bit worried that once the water is turned off and then on again then the stopcock will leak again. While this bathroom work is done, the stopcock will no doubt be turned on and off again. My question is, will PTFE have to be applied multiple times when the water is turned on again so to stop the Stopcock leaking or would it be better just to replace the whole Stopcock unit before the bathroom work starts?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If the packing gland has been fixed a few times then it would be a start idea to get this change to prevent any further leaks

If it leak once I do recommend to change for new instead fix it. Also don’t forget that high pressure there so it can cause problems in future

Ptfe will stop the gland passing if a tear appears again when you use the stopcock but you would be better to just replace the stopcock.

PTFE is only suitable in certain applications, ideally a photo would give a more accurate judgement.

PTF and applications. Depends on the plumber and the olive. Sometimes the olive works and sometimes it does not and this is why plumbers apply PTF tape. You can tweak the unions as much as possible and if still leaking, then the plumber will normally apply PTF or fit a new olive
