How do people living away from family afford an apprenticeship?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.36 PM

I’ve been looking into apprenticeships for ages now. And also any other routes possible. But the problem I have is I live in Brighton providing financially everything for my self. I wouldn’t be able to ever afford an apprenticeship I have no idea how anyone can with the first years wages? What routes have other people taken I was considering just volunteering hopefully getting someone to take a shine to me if I’m hard working enough and train me up with them after I’d volunteered long enough and also learnt a fair bit to make it worth their time. But other than that every other route means financially nothing would pay sufficiently at all. Does anyone who what I could do in my situation? I’m also considering taking out a personal loan but I’d need about £15000 to cover my rent and bills for the first year and this would be likely on the sly as they wouldn’t grant a personal loan for just surviving the first year of an apprenticeship. Any advice at all or similar experiences?

Hi You are 100% correct the wages for first year apprenticeships are disgusting in my opinion its well below any sort of wage given the work you put in . I would say you have a couple of options you could do the full college route 4 years but given the current covid situation that would be very hard . But remember the college route you still need some sort of income or if you have a partner can you afford too drop down too a 1 person income . Another option is too find a good trade school and do one of there intensive courses you would need a few thousands too pay for the course but as soon as you have completed the course you get a fully certified qualification . This is one route too get a apprenticeship behind you if the reason for your change of career is too be self employed i will make you aware its not for the faint hearted you must be 100% dedicated to making a go of it work doesnt find you . Hope this helps
