Remove or re-render over a twice failed silicone render
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.36 PM
Three attempts to apply a silicone render over new block work have failed because of bad weather so I’ve got render running off all my walls, blisters periodically appear (then disappear!) and many bare patches. The contractor wants to scrape off the worst areas, apply a mesh, skim it and then apply another coat of silicone render. With three layers of compromised render this doesn’t sound like a good idea to me. Shouldn’t it all be taken back to the block work instead?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

All needs to be removed back to substrate. If there is lime in the existing render the silicone render will not bond

Take it all off to the bare substrate and check for foreign bodies on the block work.Depending on the render brand u attempt to apply, most need a additive added either the the substrate or material, and some render systems need reinforced mesh applied to scratch coat. And never render in rain or frosty temperature/weather.

Always best to remove if you can't rely on the original substrate, depending on the background there is many different types of systems to suit 👍🏼
