Bricklaying & Repointing

Soldier line of bricks pointing damaged - advice

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.36 PM

Hi, not sure if I picked the right category here, but I am looking for a bit of help regarding an issue with cracked pointing around the soldier line of bricks above some windows and a door. Does it look like an easy fix? Also does it look like the kind of thing that can be remedied just externally, or would we have to knock the plaster off inside? We do not own the property, but are looking to buy it and I wanted to check this issue out first Thank you, any advice appreciated. Edit - my link to the photos has been removed so if anyone can still help, I will do my best to describe the problem. Basically, the pointing above a couple of windows, only on the soldier line of bricks seems to have cracked/disintegrated. I was unable to ask the current home owner about it as they weren’t present, we were with the agent. None of the bricks above the soldier line seem to be affected and from the outside there was no visible bowing to the pvc of the door or windows... thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Depends how bad the pointing has crack in some cases you can grind the mortar out then repoint them, but if the brick has dropped or moved then they would need taking out and rebedding back in place hope this helps. ,👍

4" grinder with 6mm masonry blade, grind out the joints and repoint with new mortar, this is mostly cosmetic and offer little strucural benefits

One would suspect that when the windows were changed ,movement could have occurred. First I would carry outa closer look at the joints around the movement by drilling carefully out a selection of joints in the brickwork to establish weather the movement has taken place only on the outside skin of brick. If once it’s established then carefully cut out in stages the bed and perps of the brickwork , hammer in pieces of slate and mortar bed . Once whole area has been pinned up then carry out completely pinning up process compact slate solid and point in fully to finish to surrounding pointing finish. All if not disturbance is found on the inside skin of the property.
