Red discolouration on fibre glass roof

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.36 PM

I had a fibre glass roof fitted on my conservatory nearly two years ago . I have had various problems which to his credit the man has rectified . I have ponding on roof which he says nothing can be done about . But to compound that problem when the water does evaporate in summer I am left with a huge red circle. When I spoke to him about this he said he had had other complaints but the supplier where he gets materials said it was caused by an enzyme . I was wondering if I would be in my rights to ask him to put another coating on roof that will not go red . It looks awful looking down on roof from top garden .

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hhhmm it’s not leaking so I think it would be very cheeky to ask him to put his hand in his pocket for something that isn’t his fault, the manufacturers are to blame here and even then I doubt they will pay out under there warranty as the roof isn’t leaking. Regards Frankie BT Roofing Services

Bottom line, if you’ve paid for a dove coat grey roof with a warranty/guarantee of anywhere from 10-25 years. It should be just that for the best part if not all of that life span. Pooling is not ‘standard’ & he could sweep the puddle off & re do there & then. It’s simple enough to fill with a bit more resin & top coat. Please don’t accept any excuses. If your not happy with it, it should be put right!

Another layer of resin and topcoat will simply follow the same depression in the roof and will still pond and serve no purpose. If the roof was constructed to existing falls then you have no recourse. If the roofer advised or altered the falls then you should be able to go back to him. Many roofers do not rebated the grp drip edge which can cause the water to stand on the edge if the falls are to shallow. The long and short is it should not leak and what you are seeing is a type of mould. It would drive me mad though. You could get a good roofer to infill the depression (area of ponding) with filite. This is a mixture of filite to resin 50/50. Once applied you sand it smooth and level then apply a 300csm mat over the repair followed by a new topcoat - voilà.... The only point is - if the fall is too shallow or the drip has not been rebated you will end up chasing your tail and move the ponding further up the roof..... KR Drew
