Do I need to replace rising mains lead pipe if I'm getting a combi installed separately?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.53 PM

We have had problems with an old lead rising mains water pipe at the point where it enters the loft space. This has been fixed but with a considerable amount of pipe cut back to do so. We've been advised that we should consider replacing the rising mains pipe altogether. So we are getting quotes from companies on having it replaced from the mains stopcock throughout our terraced house. It currently feeds a conventional tank system. But we are also planning to replace our old boiler. If we decided to have a combi installed that doesn't need a mains supply to the roof, do we still need to pay a separate company to replace the rising main? Or could the new mains pipework be included in installing a combi?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

all lead service pipes are required to be removed when you upgrade plumbing, some waterboards will remove and replace lead mains up to building line for free if you have children under twelve in the house.

Hi, The short answer is no, if you are having a combi fitted. Get the people who are fitting the new boiler to take care of all the pipework as part of the deal. You shouldn't have any problems. Get two or three quotes to make sure you are getting a good price and tell the contractors you are shopping around. Regards, Guy.

if you are having a combi fitted you will no longer need the tank in the loft and hence no pipe required, the boiler installer should be able to give you a combined price for the boiler and pipe replacement, regards Terry/

If you are having the combi installed anyway ask the potential installer to remove it as part of the conversion job perhaps choose a reputable company who have a strong plumbing background and not just central heating good luck
