Plastering & Rendering

Furry white mould after plastering and painting

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.36 PM

Basically we had to rush everything to be ready for our kitchen to be fitted. With no heating in our house and no time to let all the plaster dry the kitchen diner got painted. One corner that was still very damp has meant that all the paint flaked off (understandably) and is now growing white fluffy mould. My question is how to rectify this - should I sand back to the plaster, then what, mist coat or re skim? Will the mould come back? Still reading the responses - last one mentioning salt makes a lot of sense!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, sand back, sadd a stain block ideally a quality one like zinseer. Then re coat after that Failing this, strip back. Complete area and start again, unfortunately may well. Be due to a rushed process.. Or the wall not being prepped sufficiently in. The first place.

The fluffy mold u describe could be salts penetrating from brickwork due to an existing damp issue prior to plastering. Only a sand a cement backing coat with waterproofing additive would permanently solve.

Hi this can happen as the moisture in the room not being able to dry out before painting as when you turned the heating on the moisture in the wall will come to the surface to dry out causes flaking and and stains,u can put a heater on the are to dry and bring all the moisture out then I would apply a stain blocker and then re paint the are

Its salts comming out, dry brush off only until it stops, DONT use a wet cloth and dont use stainblock as it will trap the moisture, and get plenty of air circulation in the room
