Damp proof membrane in a timber frame house

Hello, I've just bought a timber frame house that was built in 1983 and I have discovered an old extractor fan hole outside the kitchen. Looking through the vent I can see there is no pipe going through the wall. I can also see the plasterboard and the insulation which means the damp proof membrane has an extractor fan sized hole in it and must have been like that for a few years. I know this is bad because I've read everywhere that you should never damage the damp proof membrane in a timber frame wall. I'm quite worried about it and want know if there's anything I can do to fix it? As I feel like I've just bought a defective house. Thanks.
