Stop smell coming through wooden floorboards

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.57 PM

Hi, Just looking for a bit of advice! We had our floors sanded and varnished in our flat, which we bought last winter. We discovered 5 layers of carpet, which we removed in the process. We can often smell when our downstairs neighbours are cooking and at times their dog. Also, they have just redone their kitchen and this seems to have made it slightly worse! As we have already paid for the floors to be done we would like to try and do it ourselves before embarking upon another (expensive) professional job! What can we do to fix/improve this? We have looked at using something called stopgap between the floorboards. Would this work or would you suggest something else? Also, we are not interested in laying down new carpets after having just redone beautiful floors! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!! Julie

To be honest there's no long term fixing. If Im correct you have sanded your subfloor, eve if you fill the gaps with filler or sawdust with varnish it will crack. At winter the wood will expand and at summer it will shrink. Only thing it might work its filling those gaps with silicone to the color of the floor.

I have not used that product you mentioned so I couldn't comment. What I would do is make sure the varnish is covering all gaps in the floorboards so a few layers maybe required. Also if you caulk underneath and on top of your skirtingboards that should provide a decent seal. Failing that if you ask your neighbour to paint their ceilings with coverstain, nothing will penetrate that! Hope this helps

As you've looked at StopGap I assume it's not suitable, as your floorboards are Tongue & Groove, if they aren't go ahead and use it, however if they are then use a silicone sealant of a similar colour or slightly darker, which will allow for some movement. The old trick used to be newspaper, but the other methods are definitely an improvement on that.
