Lampshade easyfit on plastic pendant

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.57 PM

This may sound super silly , But with lockdown , I think I’m over thinking things . When lighting isn’t earthed I know you can only Use plastic light pendants and switches , But .. the actual lampshade you attach to the PLASTIC ceiling pendant / rose can be metal ? The lampshade ? As all lampshades have some metal on them , I’m assuming this is ok . Many thanks for answering my question , I’m finding as I’m spending so much time now in the home , I’m noticing things that I wouldn’t normally , and questioning if they are in fact safe ! The lighting circuit isn’t earthed , like in millions of old properties still. Which is fine if plastic fittings are installed . The wiring is still in good condition , and consumer unit is modern and has RCD. The question I asked was that I have ALL plastic fittings .. even screws ect . In the PLASTIC ceiling pendant . Is it ok to put a metal lampshade ? The pendant attached to the ceiling wiring is plastic . I was just asking if the lampshade , like the easyfit lampshades can be metal . Which I’m sure it can as all lampshades have metal on them one way or another . I have repeated / worded my question as I don’t think it was understood by the reply saying rectify the no earth . No earth is ok with plastic fittings . I was enquiring about the lampshade being metal , the thing you hang off the plastic pendant . I’ve rabbled now ! So off the plastic pendant you just have the bulb ??? Not everyone can afford to just rewire . Ive has a test on the wiring and it’s ok .As far as I’m concerned I was doing everything by the book ? No plastic fittings I was told . I was just double checking about the shades . All the fittings are plastic ? The ceiling pendant is plastic ?? I’m Talking about the lamp shade it’s self . Not the fitting . When you say the advise is no metal , that’s about the fitting ? The pendant , in which mine is plastic . I was asking about the lampshade .

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes of course. No problem at all. Zee. The question has been answered and there is no problem putting a metal lamp shade on a plastic pendant. Trust me there really is no problem at all. Did you realise that the pendant flex is 2-core? There is no earth in a pendant flex. A lamp shade is not an exposed-conductive-part. It is impossible to be one. Alarmist electricians make a lot of money out of people giving wrong advice.

My advice would be to rectify the lack of earth as the possibility of an electric shock means it’s possible and contact with metal raises the possibility. If your aware of the fault then either it’s totally out of reach or it’s potentially dangerous. My advice would be to re-wire lighting as no earth means you are not covered by basic fault protection . The advice is no metal to protect the customer so lampshades are a luxury where as safety is a requirement. It’s the homeowners choice but would you put a lampshade on a light near a child’s bed ?

My answer would be . Unless you are a qualified electrician or a competent person then please do not touch any electrics . Get a qualified electrician to carry out any works
