Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.57 PM
Hi, we have built a new garage with loft space above for storage; are there regs that we should consider when putting in our stairs. Obv we know about handrail, pitch etc. more concerned with should it be open or closed in please?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Staircases are covered by part k, as you are aware of pitch etc I would look at the width if it is a common stair for fire regulation part B. Also height to ceiling from bottom riser. There as to be minimum height.
Also the position of the staircase in relation to minimum space to doors, landings etc.
You can have open risers but a 100mm sphere is not allowed to pass through the riser.

If the space is only for storage and not a habitable space then there are no set rules around what size style or any fire regulations to have to build your stairs too
Basically you could put boxes on top of each other to form a staircase just along as you make it safe and secure it's only storage in a garage
